What does a ballet class at KDF look like?
Ballet classes focus on fundamental technique through barre work, center exercises, and across the floor combinations. Students develop body alignment, coordination, flexibility, and endurance while learning ballet terminology. Classes emphasize proper form and musicality, building a strong technical foundation for any dance style.
What ages is ballet for, and which days do classes meet?
Ballet is offered for ages 4-18: Mini (ages 4-6) with Rebecca Tarner, Petite/Junior (ages 7-12) and Teen/Senior (ages 13-18) with Macy Monroe. Pre-Pointe (Junior, ages 9-12) and Pointe (Teen/Senior, by invitation) are also taught by Macy. All ballet and Pointe classes meet on Tuesday. See the class schedule PDF for class times.
Who teaches ballet at KDF?
Rebecca Tarner teaches Ballet for Mini dancers (ages 4-6) and serves as Artistic Director of the studio. Macy Monroe teaches Ballet and Pointe for Petite, Junior, and Teen/Senior levels (ages 7-18). Both instructors bring experience and a passion for helping dancers grow with confidence and skill.
What should my dancer wear to ballet?
Wear pink tights, a black leotard, and ballet shoes for all ballet classes. Pointe shoes are worn only by Pointe students and must be approved by the teacher first. Hair should be neatly secured in a bun. See the full dress code page for more details on all class styles.
When can my dancer start Pointe?
Pointe is by invitation only, after an evaluation by Macy Monroe. There is no fixed age. Dancers first build ankle and core strength in Pre-Pointe classes. Macy evaluates each dancer's strength, alignment, and technique and invites them to Pointe when ready. Evaluation is ongoing through the season, and pointe shoes are worn only with the teacher's approval. For more on the path to Pointe, read our pointe readiness guide.
Why is ballet called the foundation of dance?
Ballet is considered the foundation of artistic dance because it teaches the fundamental movements, body alignment, and musicality that all other dance styles build on. Whether your dancer pursues jazz, acro, contemporary, or any style, ballet strengthens control, coordination, and artistry, giving them skills that last a lifetime.
