How to Choose the Right Dance Class for Your Child

Choosing a dance class starts with your child's age, then the style your child wants to try. Kinetic Dance Force in Winter Springs, Florida groups recreational classes by age, from Tiny Dance (ages 2-4) to Teen/Senior (ages 13-18), and each class meets once a week. New students ages 2 to 18 can join any time during the season when a class has space, starting with one complimentary trial class, subject to class availability.

Which age group fits my child?

Your child's age determines the age group. Kinetic Dance Force divides recreational classes into five age groups: Tiny Dance (2-4), Mini (4-6), Petite (7-9), Junior (9-12), and Teen/Senior (13-18). Placement is by age, but teachers may recommend moving your child up or down based on dance experience.

Which dance styles are available?

Every age group at KDF offers different dance styles. Your child can explore the styles offered for their age group and choose what excites them. Your child can take one style or combine several, and each class meets once a week. Here is what is offered at each age group:

  • Tiny Dance (2-4): Tiny Dance and Tiny Tumbling

  • Mini (4-6): Tap, Hip Hop, Ballet, Acro, Jazz/Lyrical, ESI, Acro/Tumbling (ages 5-8)

  • Petite (7-9): Hip Hop, Tap, Acro, Ballet, Leaps and Turns, Contemporary, Jazz, Jazz/Acro, Musical Theatre, Stretch and Tricks, ESI, Acro/Tumbling (ages 5-8)

  • Junior (9-12): Tap, Hip Hop, Ballet, Leaps and Turns, Pre-Pointe, Contemporary, Acro, Jazz, Jazz/Acro, Musical Theatre, Stretch and Tricks

  • Teen/Senior (13-18): Tap, Hip Hop, Musical Theatre, Ballet, Stretch and Tricks, Pointe (by invitation only), Acro, Jazz, Leaps and Turns, Contemporary

How many classes can my child take?

Each class meets once a week, so your child can take one class per week or combine several styles. A dancer might choose Ballet on Tuesday and Hip Hop on Monday, for example.

Which days do classes meet?

Classes are offered Monday through Thursday and Saturday, depending on the style and age group. Check the schedule to find classes that fit your family's calendar. Each class meets once a week on the same day, so you can plan around it.

Should my child take recreational classes or join KDF Company?

Kinetic Dance Force offers weekly recreational classes for ages 2 to 18 and KDF Company, an audition-based competitive team for dancers ready for a bigger commitment. Learn the differences between recreational and Company to decide which path fits your child.

Who teaches each style?

Each class has its own instructor for the 2026-27 season. Kimmie Louwsma Gehr, former Radio City Rockette, teaches Tiny Dance, Tiny Tumbling, Acro/Tumbling (ages 5-8), and Tap. Rebecca Tarner teaches Mini Ballet, Jazz, Jazz/Lyrical, Lyrical/Contemporary, and Leaps and Turns. Macy Monroe teaches Ballet for Petite/Junior and Teen/Senior, Pre-Pointe, and Pointe. Gaby Perez teaches Hip Hop, Kaylee Addis teaches Acro, Jazz/Acro, Musical Theatre, and Stretch and Tricks, and Hannah Philby teaches ESI. See all classes and instructors for more details. Every class is open to boys and girls.
