Recreational Classes or a Competition Team: Which Is Right for Your Dancer?

Kinetic Dance Force in Winter Springs offers two paths: weekly recreational classes by age group, and KDF Company, an audition-based competitive team. Both build technique and confidence, but they require different time and financial commitments. Understanding what each offers will help you choose the path that fits your dancer's goals and your family's schedule.

What are KDF's recreational classes?

Recreational classes meet once a week and are grouped by age: Tiny Dance (ages 2-4), Mini (4-6), Petite (7-9), Junior (9-12), and Teen/Senior (13-18). Each age group has its own classes in styles such as ballet, jazz, hip hop, tap and acro, and each class meets once a week; see all classes. Every recreational class learns a recital routine for the June performance; participation in the recital is optional (families let the studio know before costumes are ordered in the fall). This path is ideal for dancers who want to explore technique and styles in a supportive, flexible environment without the pressure of competition.

What is KDF Company?

KDF Company is the studio's competitive performance team. It is audition-based and requires a higher level of commitment: dancers attend multiple classes per week plus Saturday rehearsals, compete at weekend competitions, and take on occasional performances throughout the season. Company membership is for dancers who want to push their technical skills, train alongside peers with similar drive, and experience the energy of a team. The financial costs are higher and include monthly tuition, competition fees, costumes, and travel. Success in Company requires dancers to prioritize those commitments over other activities, though other activities are possible if the dancer can keep Company first.

What is The Mini Force?

The Mini Force is a program within KDF Company designed for ages 3-6. It started this season as an introduction to the Company experience with reduced time commitment: 3-4 hours per week (three class hours Monday to Friday including ballet, jazz, and rehearsal, plus one Saturday rehearsal per month). Mini Force dancers compete as part of KDF Company with a lighter schedule than the full Company. See The Mini Force.

How do we join recreational classes?

New dancers can join any time during the season when a class has space. Start with a free trial class. No account or login is needed. You will receive a trial pass by email; bring it to your first class, and your dancer will experience the studio and instructors. After the trial, register through the Studio Director parent portal for the rest of the season.

How do we audition for KDF Company?

Auditions for the 2027-28 season happen in June and August 2027. Teachers evaluate technique, attitude, and commitment to training. Audition results are shared within one week. No prior Company experience is required, but dancers should come audition-ready in form-fitting dancewear and appropriate dance shoes, with hair secured neatly away from the face.

Comparing recreational and Company at a glance

  • Recreational: each class meets once a week, grouped by age; Company: multiple classes per week plus Saturday rehearsals

  • Recreational: start with a free trial any time a class has space; Company: audition in June or August 2027

  • Recreational: June recital, participation optional; Company: competitions during the season

  • Recreational: monthly tuition and a separate costume fee for the recital; Company: tuition, competition fees, costumes and travel

  • The Mini Force: Company for ages 3-6, 3-4 hours per week plus one Saturday rehearsal per month

Which path is right for your dancer?

Choose recreational classes if your dancer loves dance, wants to explore different styles, and prefers a flexible schedule without competition pressure. Choose Company if your dancer is motivated, wants to train alongside a dedicated team, and gets energy from performing and competing. Dancers can start with recreational classes and audition for Company in a later season. Talk with our instructors: they know your dancer and can share which path might be the next step. Start with a free trial, and let your dancer's goals guide the choice.
